In a notable conservation achievement celebrated on World Environment Day, two orphaned Asiatic black bear cubs have been successfully rehabilitated and released into Dehing Patkai National Park. The cubs, found abandoned in Dissoi Reserved Forest, Jorhat, on February 26, 2025, were transferred to the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) in Kaziranga for specialized care.
Under veterinary guidance, the cubs were treated and reared, gradually introduced to conditions designed for their eventual survival in the wild. This rehabilitation followed strict protocols emphasizing nutrition, natural behavior, and minimal human imprinting. A scientific survey identified Dehing Patkai National Park as the ideal release site due to its suitable habitat and minimal human interference.
The release into Dehing Patkai was formally approved on June 4, 2025. The CWRC team, with support from forest staff and local communities, ensured the cubs were successfully translocated. They were released in February 2026 and have not returned to their soft release enclosure, indicating a positive prognosis for their integration into the wild.
