Olive Ridley sea turtles exhibit remarkable nesting fidelity to Odisha's shores, a behavior scientists now attribute to a blend of factors. Emerging research indicates that hatchlings imprint on the Earth's magnetic signature, creating a unique 'address' that guides them across vast oceans. This magnetic navigation is complemented by local environmental cues such as freshwater estuaries and beach characteristics as they approach land.

Odisha's coastline provides a uniquely favorable environment for mass nesting, characterized by stable shorelines, suitable sediment, and good water quality. Crucially, areas with fewer coastal structures and reduced human activity show stronger nesting fidelity. This combination of natural conditions and lower human pressures supports Odisha's role as a critical arribada site, accommodating approximately half of the global Olive Ridley population during nesting events.
