Turtles Nest: Hatcheries Boost Olive Ridley Survival

As the Olive Ridley nesting season commences along the Tamil Nadu coast, the Thoothukudi forest department has proactively established dedicated hatcheries in Manappad and Kulasekarapattinam. These initiatives are crucial for protecting the approximately 100 eggs laid by each nesting turtle, which typically take 45 to 60 days to hatch.
The region's coastline, particularly areas like Kulasekarapattinam and Manappad, are identified nesting sites. To ensure the safety of eggs and hatchlings, measures include a ban on mechanized fishing vessels within five nautical miles of nesting areas. A six-member team, comprising trained fishermen, is conducting routine patrols and surveillance.
One nest was successfully transported to the Manappad hatchery on January 5th. Awareness programs are being conducted for fishermen, emphasizing the importance of conservation. Nests not susceptible to immediate threats will be left undisturbed to minimize intervention.
