The Rushikulya River rookery is abuzz with the anticipated arrival of Olive Ridley turtles for their annual mass nesting. Forest officials expect a significant turnout, with mass nesting predicted for the third week of February. This follows a record-breaking season last year, which saw over 9.04 lakh turtles lay eggs.
To ensure the safety of the nesting turtles, patrolling efforts have been significantly increased. This proactive measure aims to deter poachers who pose a threat to the turtles during this crucial mating and nesting period. In line with protective measures, two fishing trawlers from Andhra Pradesh were apprehended for illegal fishing activities.
