Okhla Landfill: Legacy Waste Cleared by 2025 Goal
2 Aug
Summary
- Landfill waste treatment rate increased, clearing legacy waste by 2025.
- Over 8.868 million MT of waste processed via biomining and bioremediation.
- Recyclable materials and inert fractions are scientifically utilized.

The Okhla landfill in South Delhi is making substantial progress in clearing legacy waste, with a revised target of 2025 for completion. Biomining and bioremediation efforts have processed 8.868 million MT of waste, significantly increasing the waste treatment rate. This initiative, directed by the National Green Tribunal since 2019, involves excavating, segregating, and processing waste into inert material, RDF, and recyclables.
The processed inert material is scientifically reused for land reclamation and infrastructure projects, adhering to environmental norms. Recyclable components are supplied to waste-to-energy plants. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi is also enhancing waste processing capacity through new facilities and planned expansions.
Despite daily additions of fresh waste, the project aims to flatten the landfill site. Previous targets have been revised due to operational challenges, but the current focus remains on processing the remaining 1.506 million MT of waste by the October 2026 deadline, contingent on preventing new waste accumulation.
