Off-Grid Defibrillators Power Up Rural Cumbria
22 Feb
Summary
- Defibrillators now operate independently of mains power.
- Renewable energy sources like wind and solar are utilized.
- These devices ensure 24/7 availability in rural areas.

A pioneering initiative has brought wind and solar-powered defibrillators to villages in West Cumbria. Barepot was the first community to receive this innovative device, with a second unit recently installed in Siddick, near Workington. This development addresses the critical issue of limited power supply in rural locations.
The North West Ambulance Service collaborated with manufacturers to engineer these off-grid defibrillators. Labour councillor Michael Heaslip highlighted that the cabinets ensure continuous availability, even where electricity is inconsistent. Megan Stephenson of NWAS stated that the sustainable and accessible life-saving equipment boosts emergency response capabilities.
