19 Apr
Summary
- Over 100 trees allegedly felled for a Rs 28-crore project in Baripada.
- Petitioner cites lack of approval from Divisional Forest Officer.
- Site served as habitat for thousands of birds, known as 'Pakhi Vihar'.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) is reviewing a case concerning the alleged felling of over 100 trees in Baripada, Odisha. A petitioner has approached the tribunal seeking intervention against a proposed Rs 28-crore urban development project slated for Jubilee Park and Jhinjiri Pond.
The project, spanning nearly nine acres of forest, water body, and wasteland, has drawn criticism for procedural lapses. The petitioner alleges that tree cutting began around April 4, 2026, without obtaining necessary prior approval from the Divisional Forest Officer. This action allegedly violates environmental regulations, including the Van Sanrakshan Evam Samvardhan Adhiniyam 2023.
Environmental concerns are significant, as the area, locally known as 'Pakhi Vihar,' has historically served as a crucial habitat for thousands of birds. Activists argue that the felling severely damages this avian refuge, potentially violating the Biological Diversity Act 2002. Senior officials and multiple government departments have been named as parties in the case, which is awaiting its first hearing.
