Odisha's Wild Secret: Tigers Roam Borderlands
6 Nov
Summary
- Tiger pugmarks found near Odisha-Chhattisgarh border in Bargarh.
- Another tiger's pugmarks detected in Semiliguda, Koraput recently.
- Big cat arrivals signal habitat connectivity, conservationists note.
Odisha is witnessing an increase in wandering big cats, with fresh evidence of tiger presence. Pugmarks believed to be from a tiger were discovered on Thursday in Bargarh, near the Odisha-Chhattisgarh border. This follows recent detections of tiger signs in Semiliguda, Koraput, on Wednesday.
A tiger, previously fitted with a radio collar and observed in Malkangiri's Motu region, has since returned to neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. However, it continues to move along the border, closely monitored by forest personnel.
Wildlife officials suggest the tigers might be dispersing from reserves in Andhra Pradesh, like the Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve. Camera traps are being installed, and rapid response teams are active in the field to gather more information.
Conservation experts are encouraged by these big cat movements, viewing them as a positive sign of habitat connectivity across eastern and central India. They emphasize that such dispersal highlights the critical need for secure habitats and functional wildlife corridors.
