Odisha MLAs Demand AI for Elephant Safety, Better Habitats

Eight MLAs from Odisha's elephant-rich regions called for enhanced elephant habitat management during a World Elephant Day event. They emphasized the critical need for wider use of artificial intelligence and advanced technology to track elephant movements and reduce human-elephant conflict. Additionally, they highlighted the necessity of planting bamboo to improve elephant fodder and their overall habitat.

The Forest Minister reiterated the government's dedication to elephant conservation, promoting a science-based, technology-enabled, and community-centric strategy. Efforts are underway to coordinate between government departments, elected representatives, and local communities to ensure the safety of both humans and elephants. The government is also exploring options for accidental death insurance coverage for 'gaja sathis' who play a vital role in conservation.

Nandankanan Zoological Park celebrated World Elephant Day by providing a special fruit feast for its four resident elephants. The zoo, a key player in elephant rescue and rehabilitation since 1972, organized this event to raise awareness about conservation challenges like habitat loss. Mahouts were honored for their contributions, and students were given educational tours of the elephant enclosure.

Meanwhile, at Chandaka's rescue center, eight rescued elephants received special feeding. The center currently houses 45 wild elephants. Publications focusing on elephant fodder and conservation were also released during the event, underscoring the ongoing commitment to elephant welfare and management in the state.
