Odisha Coastline Vanishes: 140km Lost to Erosion

A significant portion of Odisha's coastline, approximately 140.72 km, has eroded between 1990 and 2018, impacting dozens of villages. Jagatsinghpur district has experienced the most severe erosion, losing over half of its shoreline. This environmental crisis has led the state government to launch the nation's first comprehensive rehabilitation package.

The rehabilitation effort includes relocating severely affected villages and providing essential infrastructure like housing, schools, and a cyclone shelter. Livelihood support through fish farming, dairy, and tailoring is also part of the extensive plan. Additionally, projects focus on mangrove restoration and watershed management to enhance climate resilience across affected districts.

The state is actively pursuing multiple projects and collaborations to combat sea-level rise and erosion, including seeking central government funding and partnering with international development banks. Efforts are underway to update shoreline erosion maps and develop a robust shoreline management plan for Odisha's vulnerable coast.
