30 Oct
Summary
- Endangered blackbucks were seen moving to higher ground due to flooding.
- Forest officials confirmed no wildlife casualties from the cyclone's impact.
- Over 9,000 blackbucks inhabit Ganjam, Odisha's sole blackbuck habitat.
Blackbucks in Ganjam, Odisha's sole habitat for the species, were seen migrating towards higher ground to escape inundating floodwaters. The dramatic visuals of the endangered animals navigating strong currents sparked worries about their well-being after a recent cyclone.
Forest officials have clarified that the animals depicted in circulating images successfully crossed the overflowing Rushikulya river. Berhampur DFO Sunny Khokar stated that only three blackbucks from Khandadeuli were confirmed to have crossed the river, and they all reached safety in nearby forest areas.
Authorities have established nine monitoring teams across Ganjam's three forest divisions to oversee wildlife, including blackbucks and mugger crocodiles. These teams are also tasked with clearing roads affected by fallen trees and branches. So far, no wildlife casualties have been reported.
Odisha's Ganjam district is home to over 9,000 blackbucks, according to the latest census. This species is protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
