NY Beach Advisory: High Bacteria Levels Found
10 Jun
Summary
- Sunken Meadow State Park beach is under advisory for high bacteria.
- Enterococci levels exceed the state standard for ocean samples.
- About one-third of NY state park beaches are open for summer.

A single swimming beach at Sunken Meadow State Park in Suffolk County, New York, is currently under an advisory. The state Department of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation issued this warning due to elevated levels of enterococci bacteria in the water. This advisory indicates a risk of waterborne diseases, though the beach itself remains open for now.
The New York State Department of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation regularly tests all 67 state-owned swimming beaches. Samples are analyzed weekly for bacterial contamination. Test results become available approximately 24 hours after collection and are posted daily at park offices, online, and at the beaches themselves.
Many state-operated beaches have not yet opened for the summer season. As of June 10, 2026, only about one-third of these beaches are accessible to swimmers. The remaining beaches are anticipated to open later in June, welcoming visitors for the summer months.
