Kulkarni's complaint stated that several commercial establishments had come up within one kilometer of the tiger reserve's core and critical habitat, with some facilities even within 100 meters. The complaint also raised concerns about operations within the Castlerock Wildlife Range, which is part of the Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary and falls under the Kali Tiger Reserve's administration. These activities were argued to violate multiple legal provisions governing protected areas, wildlife habitats, and land-use restrictions.
The NTCA's letter has gained significance against the backdrop of rising human-wildlife conflicts in Karnataka and the state government's stated resolve to curb tourism activities in a bid to address this issue, which has escalated in recent weeks.
