Nottinghamshire Fires: Heatwave Sparks Heathland Blaze Fears
26 Jun
Summary
- An educational initiative targets schools to prevent heathland fires.
- Recent blazes occurred at Sherwood Pines and Oak Tree Nature Reserve.
- Disposable barbecues, cigarettes, and glass bottles are fire hazards.

Nottinghamshire is urging residents to exercise greater caution following a series of serious open-air fires. The recent forest fire at Sherwood Pines occurred amidst several blazes in the Mansfield area and a deliberate fire at Oak Tree Nature Reserve in 2022. In response, an educational initiative has been launched in local schools to help protect vulnerable heathlands from both accidental and intentional fires. This project, running until March 2028, aims to increase public awareness and influence behavior, as evidenced by recent scorch marks on land within the last few days and approximately two months ago.
This heightened risk coincides with a UK heatwave that has already set new June temperature records. Fire and Rescue Services highlight common causes, including disposable barbecues, which contribute to a proportion of open fires. Additionally, discarded cigarettes in dry conditions and glass bottles that can magnify sunlight on hot days are identified as significant wildfire ignition risks. Residents are strongly advised to be vigilant and mindful of these dangers.
