Heatwave Eases as Rain Sweeps Northern India
29 Apr
Summary
- Delhi experienced its wettest April in 18 years with varied weather.
- Northern states like Himachal, Haryana, Punjab, and UP saw temperature drops.
- Several states issued alerts for thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.

Delhi experienced a varied April, marking its wettest month in 18 years with spells of rain, heat, and clean air. Maximum temperatures in the capital settled around 37 degrees Celsius, a welcome drop from above-normal levels, attributed to a cyclonic circulation. Despite recent relief, over 7,800 fire incidents were recorded in Delhi in the first four months of 2026, with April alone seeing over 2,300.
Across northern India, several states witnessed a decrease in temperatures. Himachal Pradesh braced for a wet spell until May 5, while Haryana and Punjab reported maximum temperatures below normal. Uttar Pradesh also saw light rain, with Lucknow experiencing cooler conditions. Rajasthan, however, continued to face intense heat, though a slight drop in maximum temperatures offered some relief.
Weather alerts have been issued for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in Uttarakhand and West Bengal over the next week. In contrast, the southern states of Kerala and Karnataka have welcomed rains, providing relief from persistent heatwaves. Mizoram has been particularly affected by continuous heavy rain and strong winds, leading to school closures.
