Northeast Florida Coastal Resilience Study Underway
28 Jun
Summary
- Study assesses aquatic connectivity to boost coastal resilience.
- Road structures impact river flow, flooding, and habitats.
- Research spans 12 Florida counties starting this month.

The University of North Florida Institute of Environmental Research and Education (IERE) is spearheading a critical study focused on Northeast Florida's aquatic connectivity.
This initiative aims to enhance coastal resilience by investigating how infrastructure, such as bridges and culverts, disrupts natural river flows. Such fragmentation contributes to increased flooding and negatively impacts fish and wildlife habitats.
Beginning this month, researchers will gather data across twelve Florida counties. The evaluation will focus on organism passage, floodwater drainage, and infrastructure conditions to support informed decision-making for regional development and environmental protection.
