North Yorkshire Residents Fight Solar Plans
7 Jan
Summary
- Residents formed a group to oppose the Stell Solar Farm proposal.
- Concerns include historical significance and transport risks.
- Over £4,000 raised to fund an independent consultant's report.

A contentious proposal for the 30MW Stell Solar Farm, situated between Bedale and Exelby in North Yorkshire, faces significant opposition from local residents. The project, submitted by energy firm Enviromena, has attracted more than 430 objections. Concerns are primarily focused on the land's historical significance and the potential impact on local transport networks. A newly formed group, 'Say No To Stell Solar Farm,' is spearheading the campaign against the development.
Local residents have actively raised funds, collecting over £4,000 to challenge the solar farm plans. Sales of a calendar featuring images of the proposed site generated approximately £1,500. This funding was instrumental in commissioning an independent consultant to analyze the project's effects. The consultant's report identified an "unacceptable risk" to pedestrians, cyclists, and equestrians using local roads and pathways.
Enviromena acknowledges the diverse community views on renewable energy projects. The company stresses the project's potential to generate clean energy for about 13,830 homes annually, contributing to the UK's net-zero transition. They maintain a commitment to transparency and community engagement, highlighting Yorkshire's crucial role in developing affordable, low-carbon electricity and reducing fossil fuel dependency. The application is expected to be reviewed by councillors later this year.
