North India braces for rain deluge: Systems collide

North India is bracing for a significant spell of rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds due to the convergence of two powerful weather systems. A deep depression, which has already caused heavy rainfall in eastern and central India, is now tracking westward. It is set to interact with a fresh western disturbance currently active over the Himalayas.

This combination is expected to intensify rainfall activity across North India over the next three to four days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts widespread rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, over Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh. Chhattisgarh is predicted to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated extremely heavy showers on July 29.

This active monsoon spell is anticipated to provide relief from warm and humid conditions and help alleviate the seasonal rainfall deficit that has affected several parts of North India. The monsoon season, which began with a significant deficit in June, has seen some recovery in July due to successive low-pressure systems, though cumulative rainfall remains below normal.
