Deep Freeze Grips North India as Fog and Icy Winds Bite

A severe cold spell, characterized by dense fog and biting northwesterly winds, has enveloped large parts of North India. This meteorological cocktail is causing overcast skies and significantly low daytime temperatures, ranging from 10-16°C across Punjab and Haryana, with rural areas experiencing single-digit temperatures. The conditions are expected to persist, impacting daily life and activities across the region.

Delhi is bracing for a prolonged period of cold weather, with maximum temperatures predicted to stay between 12-15°C at Safdarjung and 10-14°C at Palam for the next ten days. While minimum temperatures may not reach the extreme lows of 2019, they are still expected to fall to around 3-4°C. The icy winds are a key factor, making the daytime feel extremely cold despite the fog.

Meteorologists define a 'cold day' when minimum temperatures are below 10°C and maximums are significantly lower than normal. The region has already witnessed its lowest maximum temperature this season at 14.2°C on December 31, a six-year low. The persistent cold northwesterly winds have been instrumental in this sustained drop in temperatures, creating a harsh winter environment.
