The Noida Authority has committed to a significant environmental initiative, planning to construct multiple Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) within city drains. This strategic step is designed to ensure that only treated wastewater is discharged into drains that ultimately feed the Yamuna River. The overarching goal is to achieve 'zero discharge' status for Noida, preventing any untreated wastewater from polluting the soil or water bodies.
This ambitious project was approved in the Authority's 221st board meeting. It follows a directive from the National Green Tribunal on August 3, 2022, which mandated the cessation of untreated waste dumping into drains. The NGT had also levied a ₹100 crore penalty on Noida for its role in river pollution, a decision the Authority had challenged in the Supreme Court.
The plan involves issuing a tender to select an expert agency that will implement the latest technologies for wastewater treatment. Phase I will see the construction of five STPs with a capacity of 90 MLD, requiring an investment of ₹300 crore. Officials anticipate that this phase will take at least two years to complete, marking a substantial effort towards mitigating Yamuna's pollution.
