Noida Fights Hindon River Pollution with New STP
26 Feb
Summary
- Greater Noida Authority will build a new sewage treatment plant.
- The plant aims to curb pollution from the Hawaliya drain into Hindon river.
- Pollution levels in the drain exceed permissible limits for BOD and COD.

The Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) is initiating a significant project to establish a sewage treatment plant (STP) on the Hawaliya drain. This critical initiative aims to address a major source of pollution flowing into the Hindon river near Momnathal village. The Hawaliya drain, a 13km channel, currently carries untreated domestic sewage and industrial waste from numerous outfalls into the Hindon, which subsequently merges with the Yamuna River.
This action follows directives from the National Green Tribunal and the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board, which have consistently highlighted the drain as a primary contributor to the Hindon's declining water quality. The selected agency will be responsible for assessing and implementing solutions to rejuvenate the drain, enhancing water quality, flood resilience, and overall ecological balance.
Recent water sample analyses reveal alarming pollution levels. Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) has been recorded at 48 mg per litre, significantly above the Central Pollution Control Board's permissible limit of 30 mg per litre. Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is at 288 mg per litre, indicating severe contamination from untreated wastewater and industrial effluents. The drain’s current capacity is insufficient to manage the inflow, leading to frequent flooding and environmental degradation.
