Noida's Green Belts: Neglected Oases or Polluted Eyesores?
7 Apr
Summary
- Green belts, meant for clean air, are now dumping grounds.
- Residents complain of garbage, sewage, and security threats.
- Authority acts on complaints, but upkeep remains erratic.

Noida's numerous green belts, envisioned as vital buffers between arterial roads and residential sectors to combat vehicular pollution and improve air quality, are reportedly in a state of neglect. Many of these areas, which span between 400 and 800 meters, have devolved into dumping sites for horticulture waste, construction debris, and roadside garbage. Residents in affected sectors, including 35, 47, 51, 36, 37, and 70, express dismay over the squalor.
Specific issues highlighted include sewage discharge into green belts, leading to dying trees and mosquito breeding grounds, particularly near Sector 70. Encroachment by food vendors and unauthorized equipment storage by discoms further diminish the intended purpose of these spaces. Residents in Sector 51 report extensive dumping of garbage and C&D waste, while in Sector 35, damaged boundary walls have led to security concerns, with laborers entering residential areas and recent thefts reported.
The horticulture department acknowledged routine cleaning but stated actions are taken upon complaints, with fines imposed on contractors. However, residents of Sector 36 expressed disappointment, noting that promises made two years ago following meetings with Authority officials remain unfulfilled. Suggestions for developing these belts into nature walks with amenities for residents have also not seen action.
