The National Capital Region experienced a severe air quality decline on Saturday, with Noida recording an alarming AQI of 455, the highest in the country. Several other NCR cities, including Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Greater Noida, also faced "severe" air quality.
Experts cite the recent slowdown in wind speeds, exacerbated by an approaching western disturbance, as the primary cause for the accumulation of pollutants near the ground. This has pushed the AQI into hazardous ranges, impacting public health across the region.
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) acknowledged that Uttar Pradesh's NCR districts showed satisfactory performance in pollution abatement but stressed the need for timely action, particularly in the vehicular sector. Meanwhile, Delhi and Haryana face directives to tackle traffic congestion, road dust, and waste burning more effectively.
