A significant new book, "Birds of the Nilgiris: A Historical Account (1839-2025)" by P. J. Vasanthan, was launched on the evening of June 19, 2026. This release marks the culmination of over three decades of dedicated research, observation, and documentation.
The book provides an in-depth historical account of the avian species within The Nilgiris district, tracing their presence from the earliest recorded observations in 1839 up to 2025. It contains more than 530 pages, approximately 200,000 words, and over 600 photographs.
Following the book's release by District Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru, a panel discussion took place. This event featured experts who deliberated on the ecological future of The Nilgiris. Key topics included endemic species, water security provided by the Western Ghats, shifting migratory patterns, invasive species, local extinctions, and the impacts of climate change.
The discussions also highlighted the critical importance of developing a long-term ecological restoration strategy. The book itself aims to document not only the bird species but also the evolving landscapes, habitats, and conservation challenges faced over nearly two centuries.
