Illegal Mining Allegations Spark NGT Investigation
26 May
Summary
- NGT forms committee to probe illegal sand mining allegations.
- Alleged illegal extraction occurred without required environmental clearances.
- Villagers fear environmental damage and revenue loss due to mining.

The National Green Tribunal's (NGT) east zone bench has initiated an investigation into allegations of illegal sand mining along the Subarnarekha river in Odisha's Balasore district. This action stems from a petition filed by local residents concerned about unregulated extraction activities near Mohammad Nagar Patna and Sekhsarai villages.
The NGT has established a joint committee, comprising representatives from the Balasore district collector, SEIAA, and OSPCB, to ascertain the facts on the ground. This committee is tasked with inspecting the site and submitting a comprehensive report within four weeks. The OSPCB will coordinate these efforts.
Petitioners allege that three private parties have been extracting sand without obtaining mandatory environmental clearances, consent to establish, consent to operate, or mining lease approvals. Despite complaints from villagers, no stringent action has reportedly been taken against the alleged sand mafia.
Concerns have been raised about potential embankment weakening, environmental degradation, and inconvenience to local residents. The petition also highlights substantial revenue losses for the state government due to these illegal activities. The NGT has issued notices to various state and central authorities, along with the private parties involved, directing them to file their replies within six weeks. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on August 10, 2026.
