Yamuna Floodplain: NGT Rejects August 2026 Deadline
10 Mar
Summary
- NGT orders Delhi govt to speed up Yamuna floodplain demarcation.
- August 2026 deadline deemed unreasonable by the tribunal.
- Physical demarcation of the 22-km stretch is yet to commence.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has mandated the Delhi government to accelerate the demarcation of the Yamuna River's floodplain across a 22-kilometer stretch from Wazirabad to Palla. The NGT found the proposed completion timeline of August 2026 to be unreasonable, especially after receiving data from the Survey of India. The tribunal has directed the government to re-examine its action plan and submit a new report within two weeks with a shorter, feasible timeline.
Physical demarcation of the floodplain has not yet commenced, with the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) having only floated a tender. The NGT is hearing two cases based on recent news reports highlighting the long-standing delays in this crucial exercise. Previous NGT orders emphasized demarcation using the 1:100-year flood level and 1-meter contour mapping, a method applied to other rivers like the Ganga.
Authorities cited technical limitations and data gaps, extending the projected completion to August 2026. However, the NGT pointed out that similar exercises in other states were completed more quickly. The demarcation is vital for protecting river ecosystems and preventing construction in flood-prone areas, particularly given recent Yamuna flooding in Delhi. The tribunal has scheduled further hearings on this matter.
