NGT Orders Closure of Polluting Dhalao Near AIIMS Within 6 Months

On October 28, 2025, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the closure of a dhalao (garbage dump) located approximately 50 meters from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) within the next 6 months. The NGT was hearing a plea filed by an 85-year-old resident of South Extension 1 who raised concerns about the dhalao.
An inspection by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) found that the dhalao was partially filled with mixed garbage, including waste from commercial shops, restaurants, medical facilities, and even rotten vegetables from roadside vendors. The garbage was spilling over onto the road in front of the dhalao, and all 11 dustbins at the site were filled with the mixed waste, resulting in a foul odor.
Until the dhalao is closed, the NGT has directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to comply with the standard operating procedures (SOP) set by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) for environmental protection. This includes measures such as covered storage, odor management, leachate control, fire prevention, and maintaining aesthetics. The DPCC has been tasked with monitoring the dhalao, and any failure to comply will result in immediate remedial and punitive action.
