NGT Cautions Noida Over Wetland Waste Dumping
16 Aug
Summary
- NGT orders UPPCB to ensure Noida authority acts on wetland waste.
- Dumping of municipal waste and debris in sectors 137 and 49 wetlands.
- Next hearing scheduled for October 7, 2026, for wetland pollution case.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued a directive to the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB), mandating oversight of the Noida authority's actions concerning wetland pollution. Specifically, the UPPCB must ensure that the Noida authority addresses the dumping of municipal solid waste and construction debris. This issue affects wetlands located in sectors 137 and 49.
The NGT's order, dated July 24, 2026, stems from ongoing hearings related to environmental pollution in Noida. The tribunal noted that representations submitted on July 30, 2025, and July 10, 2026, alleging illegal dumping, had not yet been fully considered. The applicant highlighted concerns about waste being deposited within and near the in-situ wetlands.
During proceedings, the Noida authority's counsel assured the tribunal that remedial actions would be implemented. The UPPCB also provided an update on related proceedings before the Supreme Court concerning pollution in an irrigation canal near Sector 137, noting that its own prior orders are under challenge. A committee, headed by the Union home secretary, has been formed by the Supreme Court to create a Yamuna Action Plan.
The NGT's July 24 order did not make definitive findings regarding the alleged dumping. The case has been further listed for a hearing on October 7, 2026, for continued deliberation and updates on the environmental concerns.
