Summary
- NGT seeks new responses on alleged construction despite status quo.
- Bus stand project planned on two acres of a local pond.
- Residents cite ecological role and alternative sites for the project.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has requested updated responses from state authorities regarding a contentious bus stand project in Padampur, Bargarh district, Odisha. This action follows allegations that construction activities were initiated despite a prior order to maintain the status quo on the disputed land. The project by the state transport department aims to reclaim approximately two acres of a pond, locally known as 'kata,' for the bus stand. The NGT's eastern bench in Kolkata issued notices to state officials last August and subsequently ordered a halt to any construction or alteration of the land's nature on September 16. However, petitioners filed a new application on May 21, alleging that a tender for the Rs 28.75 crore project was floated on March 30, indicating an intent to fill the pond and potentially undermine the ongoing legal proceedings. The tribunal has extended the status quo order and scheduled the next hearing for August 12, with the order released online on May 29. Residents opposing the project contend that ample government land is available elsewhere in Padampur and express concerns that reclaiming the pond could exacerbate flooding, disrupt groundwater recharge, and create public health issues. They have also requested a conservation plan for the pond.
