NGT Extends Deadline for ACC Cement Pollution Report

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has granted a four-week extension for a joint committee to submit its findings on alleged air pollution caused by ACC Cement's plant in Bilaspur district, Himachal Pradesh. The original complaint was filed on September 23, 2024, by local resident Kashmir Singh. The tribunal's bench, including judicial member Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi and expert member Dr. Afroz Ahmad, issued the order on Wednesday.

The joint committee cited delays in receiving a technical expert's report, which was eventually received on December 16. The NGT directed that the report signed by two committee members be filed within four weeks, also allowing another panel member, Dr. Narender Sharma, to submit his comments separately. The next hearing is scheduled for February 12, 2026.

Previously, the Himachal Pradesh State Pollution Control Board informed the NGT about the proposed use of environmental compensation funds for local development. These funds, amounting to Rs 15 lakh with the board, are earmarked for projects such as sustainable water resource development and solid waste management infrastructure, with some projects already completed.
