14 Jan
Summary
- Illegal garbage depot operates illegally since 2021 on Rajasthan Housing Board land.
- Site pollution threatens drinking water sources and poses bird-strike hazard.
- NGT issued directions for compliance with Solid Waste Management Rules.

The National Green Tribunal's Central Zone Bench in Bhopal has issued directives to Rajasthan authorities concerning an illegal garbage depot in Mansarovar, Jaipur. This illegal dumping site, situated on Rajasthan Housing Board land, has been reportedly operational since 2021, posing significant environmental and health risks to nearby residents.
The tribunal was informed that the depot lacks necessary environmental clearances and engages in open dumping and burning of waste. This poses a severe threat to drinking water sources, as it is located near a public health engineering department's tube well and water tank. Furthermore, its proximity to Jaipur International Airport raises aviation safety concerns due to bird congregations.
On January 10, a committee constituted by the NGT inspected the site. The tribunal has granted three weeks for the submission of the inspection report and for various respondents, including district and municipal authorities, to file their replies. Meanwhile, authorities are mandated to strictly adhere to the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, with a specific prohibition against open waste burning.
