Summary
- International competition seeks a new landmark to inspire climate action.
- Eight designs were submitted, with five finalists now selected.
- Finalists include Heatherwick Studio, MVRDV, and Mecanoo.

An international competition organized by the social venture Shift has revealed five innovative architectural design concepts for a new global landmark. This initiative aims to create a significant structure that inspires visitors and promotes climate action.
Eighty teams initially submitted proposals, with five finalists selected in May and their designs unveiled this month. The competition brief emphasized the need for designs that represent the next generation of sustainable architecture and host a permanent program curated by Shift.
Among the finalists is Heatherwick Studio with "Urban Reef," envisioned for Rotterdam's waterfront. This concept focuses on visitor experience through immersive spaces designed to foster understanding of climate challenges without blame. Ecosistema Urbano's "A Living Landmark" proposes a regenerative ecosystem where architecture, landscape, and public life intertwine, featuring vertical gardens and bio-receptive surfaces.
MVRDV's "Rotterdam ROCKS!" envisions a porous, stacked landscape that lifts nature and biodiversity into the air. Mecanoo's "House of Shift" boasts a striking space station-inspired look, integrating upcycling and ecological principles. Finally, Office for Political Innovation's "Planetary Landmark for the Climate Age" moves beyond traditional monuments to create a dynamic space for reshaping the world collaboratively.
