15 Mar
Summary
- A new oak sculpture marks Barrow Beck's restoration.
- The artwork reflects water's movement and local landmarks.
- The project was funded by the government's Species Survival Fund.

An oak sculpture now graces Barrow Bay on Derwent Water, Cumbria, celebrating the recent restoration of Barrow Beck. Artist Daniel Weatheritt designed the layered storybook-shaped artwork, which symbolizes water's flow through the landscape and features carvings inspired by nearby landmarks, including Ashness Bridge. This complex hardwood piece tested Weatheritt's traditional woodworking skills.
The restoration of Barrow Beck was part of the National Trust's Riverlands programme, which aims to reconnect the beck with its natural course and enhance wildlife habitats. Local young people also played a role in shaping the sculpture.
This installation complements existing art around the lake and links with West Cumbria Rivers Trust's Watery Walks initiative. The project was funded by the government's Species Survival Fund.
