New Mexico's Alien Throne Crumbles After Heavy Rains
7 Nov
Summary
- A 15-foot-tall rock formation known as the Alien Throne collapsed.
- The collapse occurred on Navajo lands near the Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Wilderness.
- Heavy rainfall from recent storms caused the destruction of the unique pillar.

A uniquely shaped 15-foot pillar, nicknamed the Alien Throne, has collapsed on Navajo lands in New Mexico. This striking geological formation, located near the Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Wilderness, was a recognizable landmark due to its otherworldly appearance. Guide Kialo Winters reported last seeing the structure intact on October 18. Upon his return on October 30, he discovered the pillar had crumbled, leaving only a five-foot stump.
The collapse is a direct result of recent intense storms that brought substantial rainfall to the northwestern part of the state. This incident follows the loss of another significant rock formation in the same region less than a month prior. The Alien Throne, also known as Tse Binaka Niyol in Navajo, was a fusion of bony spines topped with sandstone.
