Researchers have discovered a new flowering plant species in Assam's Manas National Park, expanding the region's known flora. The plant, named Osbeckia assamensis, was scientifically described by researchers Barnali Das and Namita Nath and published in 'Phytotaxa'.
The species was found growing in scattered populations within the park's grasslands during extensive field surveys between 2021 and 2025. This perennial shrub typically reaches heights of 2 to 2.5 meters and produces pink flowers measuring 3 to 3.5 cm.
Flowering and fruiting occur between September and February. While similar to Osbeckia nayarii, Osbeckia assamensis differs in stem structure, flower arrangement, calyx margins, and seed size. Initial assessments have classified it as Data Deficient by the IUCN.
