25 Mar
Summary
- New Delhi ranked world's most polluted capital for the eighth consecutive year in 2025.
- Annual PM2.5 concentration in New Delhi was 82.2 micrograms per cubic meter.
- India's national air quality standard for PM2.5 is 40 micrograms per cubic meter.

For the eighth consecutive year, New Delhi has been identified as the world's most polluted capital city, as revealed by the 2025 World Air Quality Report. The city's annual PM2.5 concentration reached 82.2 micrograms per cubic meter, far exceeding the World Health Organization's recommended safe limit of five micrograms per cubic meter.
While New Delhi itself recorded this high level, the broader National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi experienced even worse air quality, with an annual PM2.5 concentration of 99.6 micrograms per cubic meter. This placed the NCT as the fourth most polluted urban area globally. Other cities within the National Capital Region (NCR) also featured prominently on the list of highly polluted cities worldwide.
Despite a marginal decrease in Delhi's average annual PM2.5 levels compared to 2024, the report highlighted significant monthly spikes caused by seasonal smog and dust storms. Factors such as crop burning, temperature inversions, industrial activities, and construction continue to contribute to severe air pollution, particularly in the Indo-Gangetic plain.
