Zoo Atlanta Welcomes New Clouded Leopard
16 Apr
Summary
- Boon, an 8-year-old clouded leopard, arrived Tuesday.
- Clouded leopards are vulnerable due to habitat loss and poaching.
- Boon is currently in quarantine before public viewing.

Zoo Atlanta recently welcomed Boon, an 8-year-old female clouded leopard, who made her journey from the Nashville Zoo. Her arrival was recommended by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan.
Clouded leopards, belonging to the genus Neofelis, are mid-sized wild cats native to Asian forests. They are distinguished by their exceptionally long tails and unique ankle joints, allowing them to climb and descend trees headfirst with ease. However, their populations are threatened by deforestation, poaching, and illegal wildlife trade, leading the IUCN to classify them as vulnerable.
As a new ambassador for her species, Boon's presence at Zoo Atlanta highlights ongoing conservation efforts that visitors help support. She is currently in a behind-the-scenes quarantine period. Following this, she will be introduced to her new habitat in the Complex Carnivores area, where guests will eventually be able to see her.
