The Government of New Brunswick has allocated $254,600 to fund energy efficiency upgrades at the AV Group NB pulp mill in Atholville. These improvements are designed to significantly lower the facility's carbon footprint.
The investment will facilitate the installation of a new energy-efficient dump condenser, thermal insulation upgrades, advanced probes to monitor energy consumption, and a modern control system. These measures are expected to reduce the mill's carbon footprint by an estimated 3.4 percent.
This initiative is part of a larger $3.5 million effort by the mill to reduce emissions, with a primary goal of eliminating its reliance on Bunker C oil. The upgrades are crucial for long-term sustainability, helping to manage rising raw material and energy costs while enhancing environmental performance.
The pulp mill is a major employer in the region, providing jobs for 270 people. The investment supports the local economy and underscores the province's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with its target of cutting emissions by 10.7 Mt by 2030.
