The Arignar Anna Zoological Park in Vandalur has received a pair of Asiatic lions from Indore Zoo, marking a significant step in conservation breeding and visitor engagement. This exchange is part of a broader initiative to enhance species management and genetic diversity within captive populations.
The newly arrived lions will contribute to improving the quality of the existing lion safari, providing an enriched experience for zoo visitors. Their introduction is also a key component of supporting the conservation of Asiatic lions, a species facing various challenges.
In addition to the lions, Vandalur Zoo also acquired Egyptian vultures and a Red Jungle Fowl. In return, the zoo transferred a hippopotamus, ostriches, and yellow anacondas to Indore Zoo, fostering inter-zoo cooperation.
Standard zoo protocols dictate that the lions will undergo a mandatory four-week quarantine. This period ensures their health and acclimatization before they are introduced to their enclosure for public viewing, a process overseen by veterinarians and animal keepers.
