Following the catastrophic North Sea flood of 1953, the Netherlands constructed the ambitious Eastern Scheldt Barrier, completing it in 1986. This 9-kilometer structure was designed to protect against high water while allowing tidal flows to maintain the estuary's environment. However, the reduction in tidal currents, a consequence of the barrier's operation, led to an unforeseen environmental issue known as "sand hunger."
The barrier's design, which keeps it mostly open to allow water exchange, weakened the currents responsible for transporting sediment. This disruption means less sand is returned to tidal flats, mudflats, and salt marshes during tidal cycles. Consequently, these areas have experienced erosion, shrinking in size. A report indicated an average erosion of approximately 1 centimeter per year on the Eastern Scheldt's tidal flats.
To address this ongoing "sand hunger" and its ecological ramifications, Dutch authorities are implementing sand nourishment projects. A current initiative, spanning from 2022 to 2027, involves adding sand to vulnerable areas like the Galgeplaat tidal flat. This intervention aims to maintain these landscapes, preserve habitats for birds and seals, and bolster coastal defenses against rising sea levels and storm surges. Monitoring will follow the nourishment work.
