Flamingo Haven Polluted, Sightings Plummet
23 Jun
Summary
- Polluted tidal inflow channel shows 9x permissible TDS levels.
- Toxic mix of pollutants threatens vital wetland ecosystem.
- Reduced flamingo presence is an early warning of ecological stress.

Recent tests reveal alarming pollution levels in Navi Mumbai's DPS Flamingo Lake, with Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) reaching 19,600 mg/l, more than nine times the acceptable limit. This severe contamination stems from polluted tidal inflows, posing a significant threat to the wetland's ecological health.
These findings have prompted calls for immediate government intervention, including granting Conservation Reserve status to the lake for stronger legal protection. Previous tests in March and April also indicated high TDS and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), failing inland water quality standards.
The deteriorating water quality directly impacts the flamingo population, as they depend on specific environmental conditions. Their diminishing presence serves as an early warning of the wetland's growing ecological stress and reflects a global concern over wetland degradation.
