The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has initiated a significant crackdown on rising air pollution by ordering the closure of 19 construction sites and issuing notices to 42 others. This decisive action was taken after the city's air quality index (AQI) surpassed the 200-mark in several areas, prompting strict enforcement of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP-4).
Municipal Commissioner Kailas Shinde confirmed that the civic body is rigorously implementing 27 air pollution control guidelines from 2024. Flying squads have been deployed across all wards to monitor compliance and ensure dust emission controls. In response to violations, 10 show-cause notices and 32 instruction letters have been issued, alongside penalty notices to 173 developers.
Authorities are emphasizing the importance of air quality monitoring equipment at construction sites, with 30 already compliant and others in the process. Citizens are advised to rely on official data sources like the Sameer App and CPCB website, as third-party sensors may not meet calibration standards. Measures to combat road dust, including mechanized brushes and treated water spraying, are also underway.
