Nature agency chief: Vandalism 'crosses the line'
17 Feb
Summary
- NatureScot headquarters vandalized twice recently.
- Staff members have been distressed by public comments.
- The agency faces criticism over gannet chick culls.

NatureScot's chief executive, Nick Halfhide, has expressed deep concern over recent attacks and vandalism at the organization's Inverness headquarters. This incident marks the second time the building has been targeted. Halfhide described the vandalism as "deeply disturbing" and noted that some public comments directed at NatureScot have "crossed a line," causing significant distress to staff members.
He further explained that despite understanding public reactions to certain decisions, such as the controversial gannet chick cull on Sula Sgeir, the level of public denigration is unacceptable. Halfhide highlighted instances where staff were reduced to tears by "baseless comments," emphasizing his duty to protect their welfare. The agency has also faced criticism regarding decisions on beaver reintroduction in the Highlands and encountered abusive behaviour towards staff in public spaces.
