25 Jan
Summary
- Reserve needs £115,000 for phase two of boardwalk and bridge replacement.
- New structures will be wider, step-free, and made from durable recycled plastic.
- Work aims to improve accessibility and withstand annual flooding.

A nature reserve situated by the River Thames is initiating a fundraising drive to gather £115,000 for the second phase of a vital renovation project. This initiative aims to replace an outdated boardwalk and footbridge, enhancing accessibility for all visitors.
The planned improvements include a new 60-meter accessible boardwalk and a custom-designed 13-meter bison bridge. Both structures will feature step-free access and handrails, constructed from durable, recycled plastic to ensure longevity against annual flooding.
Phil Rooney, representing the reserve, highlighted that the current boardwalk, over two decades old, is slippery, sinking, and poses safety risks due to frequent flooding. The 'buy a board' campaign invites public donations, with recognition offered on site and a virtual donor wall.
