Nashik Faces Water Crisis: Rationing Begins Now!
9 Oct
Summary
- Nashik authorities mandated to start immediate water rationing.
- Dam stocks must last an estimated seven to eight months.
- Potable water use for construction, gardening, and car washes banned.
Water scarcity looms over Nashik as local authorities have been directed to commence immediate water rationing. Existing dam reserves are projected to last only seven to eight months, necessitating stringent conservation efforts.
Municipal corporations and councils are tasked with extending the intervals between water supply cycles by introducing additional dry days. The use of potable water for construction, gardening, road works, and washing vehicles is strictly forbidden. Treated wastewater is to be utilized for such activities instead.
This directive emphasizes the need for proactive planning and micro-management to prevent a severe crisis. Despite some rainfall, groundwater recharge has been inadequate, leading to a sharp decline in water levels in wells and borewells. Rabi cultivation in severely drought-hit areas is discouraged, with available water to be prioritized for drinking and livestock fodder.
Unauthorized agricultural pumps drawing water from reservoirs are also being targeted for disconnection by the water resources department and police.
