- The drive aims to reduce water pollution from Plaster-of-Paris idols.
In a significant environmental awareness campaign, approximately 40,000 students from Nashik's municipal and private schools participated in the 'Eco Bappa 2.0' initiative. This program, organized by the Nashik Municipal Corporation's environment department, focused on crafting eco-friendly Ganpati idols using natural 'shadu' clay ahead of the Ganeshotsav festival.
The civic body generously distributed 45 tonnes of shadu clay free of charge to the students. The initiative encourages families to opt for environmentally sound idols, thereby mitigating the water pollution typically associated with Plaster-of-Paris (PoP) idols. Children are seen as key influencers in promoting sustainable festival practices.
This year's event saw a substantial increase in participation compared to the previous year, where around 16,000 students were involved. Civic officials highlighted that such programs instill environmental consciousness from a young age, empowering students to become advocates for sustainable living within their communities.
Various dignitaries, including Guardian Minister Girish Mahajan, MLA Devyani Pharande, and District Collector Ayush Prasad, attended the event. They lauded the students' enthusiasm and urged citizens to adopt eco-friendly practices for a greener Ganeshotsav. The initiative underscores a commitment to blending traditional festivities with environmental responsibility.
