Nashik Water Yellow: Chemical Fears Rise
2 Oct
Summary
- Mayor ordered immediate borewell water testing in Ambad areas.
- Residents reported yellowish water, fearing industrial chemical contamination.
- Activists cite delays in a crucial effluent treatment plant.
Mayor Himagauri Aher of Nashik has directed civic officials to promptly test borewell water in Dattanagar and surrounding Ambad areas. This directive came after local residents voiced concerns about the water turning yellowish, leading to fears of chemical contamination from industrial sources. The issue was brought to light by petitioners involved in a Godavari pollution case, who alleged that untreated industrial effluents were compromising groundwater quality and posing health risks.
Officials from the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) were instructed to collect water samples for immediate laboratory analysis to ascertain the presence of chemical contaminants. Mayor Aher stated that the NMC would take corrective measures based on scientific results and keep residents informed. Concerns have also been raised by environmental activists regarding the delayed commissioning of a common effluent treatment plant intended for over 150 plating units in Ambad MIDC.
