River Link Project Gears Up for Crucial Clearances
31 May
Summary
- Project to irrigate 49,516 hectares across Nashik and Jalgaon districts.
- Initial phase involves constructing dams in Surgana taluka, Nashik.
- Clearances from forest and environment departments are actively being pursued.

The Water Resources Department (WRD) is actively pursuing essential clearances from the forest department and the Union environment ministry to expedite the Nar-Par-Girna river-linking project. The first phase of this significant undertaking, valued at Rs 4,116.10 crore, commenced with the issuance of a work order on May 11. This initial stage focuses on constructing multiple dams, including those at Umbarpada and Pratapgad, primarily in Surgana taluka within Nashik district.
Obtaining approvals is critical as parts of the project site fall under forest jurisdiction. A comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment is underway to secure final consent from the Union environment ministry. The ambitious network is designed to irrigate 49,516 hectares of agricultural land across Nashik and Jalgaon districts, addressing water scarcity in talukas like Malegaon and Chalisgaon by redirecting water from west-flowing rivers.
The project necessitates the acquisition of 3,801 hectares and is expected to impact 516 families. To accelerate the process, detailed data collection, including forest land maps and biodiversity assessments, is being compiled. Officials aim to secure all statutory approvals within one year, paving the way for physical construction to commence afterward.
