Summary
- New machine uses aerobic digestion to convert waste into fuel.
- Company aims to reduce landfill waste and carbon emissions.
- The process turns 4,000 tonnes of nappy waste into fuel annually.

Disposable nappies and sanitary products, notoriously difficult waste streams, are being transformed into a sustainable fuel source by a Derby-based company. Go4Greener has invested £1.25 million in a new machine, the XO22, which utilizes aerobic digestion to break down contaminants.
This biological process, stimulated for speed, efficiently processes waste in 48-72 hours. It reduces the mass and volume of waste, converting 4,000 tonnes of nappy and hygiene product waste into 2,000 tonnes of alternative fuel each year. This fuel has a high calorific value and can be used as a replacement for coal, with significantly lower carbon emissions.
The initiative aims to tackle the substantial amount of nappy waste generated, estimated at 400,000 tonnes annually in the UK. By diverting this biohazard waste from landfills, where it can take centuries to decompose and release potent greenhouse gases like methane, the process offers a more environmentally friendly solution. This innovation also brings commercial benefits, as businesses increasingly seek to reduce their carbon footprint and enhance their sustainability credentials.
