The recent "Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary Bird Census-2026" has recorded an impressive total of 642,232 birds from 270 distinct species. This comprehensive survey, conducted by the Forest Department, aims to track avian diversity and population trends within the sanctuary.
To ensure data accuracy, the sanctuary was meticulously divided into 50 survey zones. Each zone had a dedicated team performing two counts, one in the morning and one in the evening. Rigorous verification of compiled data under experienced supervision eliminated duplication before the final report.
This biennial exercise, vital for Nalsarovar's role as a significant wetland ecosystem, saw the participation of 220 bird experts and wildlife enthusiasts. Crucially, 99 local boatmen and guides provided foundational support. Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary, designated under the Ramsar Convention in 2012 for its ecological importance, remains a key site for migratory bird conservation in India.
